How I Use My Personal Experiences to Connect with Clients

At Marc Cooper Hypnosis, one of the cornerstones of my approach is creating a deep, personal connection with my clients. The reason I’m able to do that is because I draw from my own life experiences—some of which are beautiful, while others have been incredibly painful. In a world where we often feel disconnected or misunderstood, it's vital to me that every client who works with me feels genuinely seen and heard. Today, I want to share a little bit about how my personal journey has shaped my work and how I use these experiences to help others heal, find peace, and live more fulfilling lives.

The Power of Vulnerability

One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned in life is that vulnerability is not a weakness—it’s a strength. When I first began my journey in hypnotherapy, I didn’t realize how much my personal history would become an integral part of how I connect with my clients. But over time, I discovered that sharing my own struggles, triumphs, and moments of vulnerability has allowed me to build trust and foster a safe space for healing.

In my own life, I’ve experienced the highs of personal achievements, like competing in sports or succeeding in creative fields, as well as the lows of loss and grief. One of the most challenging moments in recent years was the heartbreaking decision to say goodbye to my beloved dog, Blue. That profound loss touched me in ways I hadn’t anticipated. But it also deepened my empathy and understanding for others who have suffered similar losses. It was through my personal grieving process that I developed an even greater compassion for my clients who come to me during their most vulnerable times.

My experience with grief allows me to offer a level of support that goes beyond professional knowledge—it’s personal. I know what it’s like to feel that heart-wrenching void, and when clients come to me dealing with the loss of a pet or a loved one, I don’t just offer hypnotherapy as a tool for healing. I offer a compassionate, human connection. I sit with them in that grief and help them move forward in a way that feels authentic and right for them.

A Holistic Approach Rooted in My Journey

Another key part of my work is the holistic approach I take with my clients. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions, and I’ve never approached my life in that way either. From being involved in various creative and competitive fields—whether it was my time as a race car driver, film student, or even my work as a professional poker player—I’ve learned the importance of adapting, evolving, and recognizing that every individual’s path is unique.

The same is true for my clients. When someone comes to me for hypnotherapy, I don’t treat their issue as just another case file. I recognize that behind their anxiety, stress, or past trauma, there’s a whole person with a story that deserves to be honored. I’ve lived through periods of immense pressure and stress myself, and I know firsthand how overwhelming it can feel when it seems like life is closing in on you. Whether it’s the stress of a career change, financial difficulties, or emotional struggles, I’ve been there, and that’s why I approach each session with empathy, understanding, and a genuine desire to help my clients find peace.

One of the ways I connect so deeply with my clients is by sharing snippets of my own journey. When appropriate, I’ll talk about the times I’ve struggled with stress or the moments I’ve felt unsure of my next steps. I’m not just a hypnotherapist offering suggestions—I’m a fellow traveler on this journey, and I want my clients to know they’re not alone.

The Healing Power of Collaboration

One of the things I value most in my work is the collaborative nature of hypnotherapy. I often tell my clients that I’m simply opening the door to their subconscious, but they are the ones who must walk through it. This collaborative process mirrors much of my own experiences, whether it was collaborating with others in competitive environments or working together with creative teams in film school. I’ve always found that the best outcomes arise when people come together, bringing their own unique strengths to the table.

In hypnotherapy, I use this same philosophy. I don’t view myself as the “expert” who has all the answers. Instead, I see the client as the expert on their own life, and my role is to guide them, helping them tap into their inner wisdom and power. This collaborative approach allows for deeper, more meaningful connections, and I’ve found that it makes the therapeutic process far more effective. Clients leave not just feeling better but feeling empowered, knowing that they were an active participant in their own healing.

Embracing Emotional Intensity

I’ve always been someone who experiences emotions deeply, and in my work, I embrace that intensity rather than shy away from it. Life has thrown its fair share of emotional storms my way, and instead of trying to suppress those feelings, I’ve learned to ride the waves. I know how intense emotions can be, and I use that understanding to help my clients navigate their own emotional landscapes.

One of the ways I connect with clients is by acknowledging the depth of what they’re feeling. I never minimize their pain or try to rush them through their process. Whether they’re struggling with anxiety, battling stress, or healing from trauma, I’m there with them every step of the way, helping them explore those emotions and find a sense of peace within them. This emotional intensity has been a guiding force in my own life, and I’ve come to view it as one of my greatest strengths. It allows me to relate to clients on a deep, emotional level, and together, we work to transform that intensity into healing.

Hypnotherapy and Pet Loss: A Personal Mission

Perhaps the most personal aspect of my hypnotherapy practice is my work with pet loss. As I mentioned earlier, my own experience losing Blue was life-changing, and it has made me even more committed to helping others who are navigating that same heartbreak. I know how isolating it can feel to lose a pet—society often doesn’t recognize the depth of that grief, and it can be hard to find people who truly understand. That’s why I’ve made it my mission to offer a safe, compassionate space for pet owners to heal.

I don’t just rely on professional training to guide me through these sessions—I rely on my heart. My connection with Blue taught me about unconditional love, loyalty, and the deep bond between humans and animals. I bring that understanding into my sessions, helping clients process their grief in a way that honors both their pet’s memory and their own emotional well-being.

Building Trust Through Shared Experience

At the end of the day, I believe that the most important element of hypnotherapy is trust. And trust doesn’t come from simply being a skilled practitioner—it comes from being real. By sharing my personal experiences, being vulnerable, and connecting with clients on a human level, I’m able to build that trust and create an environment where healing can truly take place.

Every client who walks through my door has their own story, their own pain, and their own dreams. My role is not just to offer hypnotherapy techniques but to walk alongside them, using the lessons I’ve learned from my own life to help them navigate theirs. Together, we create a path toward healing, one session, and one shared experience at a time.
