The Stories We’ve Lived: Letting Go of Past Trauma and Moving Forward
Introduction
Sometimes, life feels like a story we didn’t get to write. Some chapters are filled with light and joy, while others are heavy with sorrow and pain. For many of us, certain chapters—the ones shaped by trauma—seem to echo louder than others, influencing how we see ourselves, our relationships, and the world around us. And when trauma remains unresolved, it can lock us into a feedback loop: a cycle of painful memories feeding self-sabotaging behaviors, which in turn deepen the wounds of the past. Breaking free can feel impossible. But it isn’t. Hypnotherapy offers a way to step out of this loop, to gently untangle the knots of trauma, and to begin moving forward.
The Loop of Trauma and Self-Sabotage
Unresolved trauma is more than just a memory—it becomes an imprint deeply stored in the subconscious mind. Imagine someone who faced repeated criticism as a child. Those moments of feeling "not good enough" don’t simply disappear with time; they settle quietly into the subconscious. From there, they whisper limiting beliefs: “You’ll never succeed,” or “You don’t deserve happiness.” These beliefs can lead to self-sabotaging behaviors—procrastination, avoiding relationships, or settling for less than we deserve.
And here’s the cruel twist: these behaviors create outcomes that reinforce the original trauma. The procrastinator misses opportunities, the person avoiding relationships feels more isolated, and the one settling for less internalizes that they aren’t worth more. The loop tightens. Each action, or inaction, feeds back into the belief system, keeping the trauma alive and unhealed.
How Trauma and Behavior Feed Each Other
This cycle isn’t just psychological; it’s physiological too. Trauma changes the way our brains function. The amygdala, the part of the brain responsible for detecting threats, becomes overactive, making it difficult to feel safe even in non-threatening situations. The prefrontal cortex, which helps with reasoning and decision-making, often becomes less active. This imbalance creates a sense of being stuck—of knowing, logically, that something isn’t right but feeling powerless to change it.
Let me share an example from my practice. After experiencing neglect in her early years, Emma developed a deep fear of abandonment. As an adult, she’d enter relationships with a sense of doom, expecting rejection. To protect herself, she’d push people away before they could leave her. The result? She ended up alone, just as she feared, reinforcing the belief that she wasn’t lovable. Emma’s story illustrates how trauma-driven beliefs shape behaviors that seem to confirm the very pain we’re trying to avoid.
Interrupting the Cycle with Hypnotherapy
The good news is that this loop doesn’t have to be permanent. Hypnotherapy works by addressing trauma at its root—the subconscious mind. Unlike talk therapy, which often relies on conscious processing, hypnotherapy taps into the part of the mind where these limiting beliefs and emotional wounds reside.
One of the most transformative aspects of hypnotherapy is its ability to work “content-free.” This means you don’t have to relive or discuss the details of your trauma for healing to occur. For many people, this is a profound relief. By guiding clients into a deeply relaxed state, hypnotherapy creates a safe space for the subconscious mind to explore and reframe those old beliefs. Instead of “I’m not good enough,” the subconscious can adopt a new narrative: “I am worthy of love and success.”
Hypnotherapy also uses guided visualization, a powerful technique to unlock healing potential. Now, picture this person in a session with me. I guide her to picture her younger self, the little girl who felt unloved and unseen. In this safe, imaginative space, together, we work on comforting and supporting that younger self, perhaps by saying, “You are safe now, and you are deeply loved.” These visualizations help clients like Emma rewrite their internal stories, breaking the loop of trauma and self-sabotage.
Rewriting the Inner Narrative
The stories we tell ourselves shape our reality. When those stories are rooted in trauma, they can keep us stuck. But through hypnotherapy, we can begin to rewrite those narratives. This process isn’t about denying the past or pretending the pain didn’t happen. It’s about reframing it—about finding a way to honor our resilience and move forward with compassion for ourselves.
One client, Michael, came to hypnotherapy feeling paralyzed by self-doubt. His trauma stemmed from a series of public failures that had left him terrified of taking risks. During his sessions, Michael accessed memories of those moments but also explored times when he had succeeded, times when he had been brave. Through hypnotherapy, he began to see his failures not as evidence of inadequacy but as stepping stones toward growth. He left those sessions with a new narrative: “I’ve faced challenges before, and I’ve grown stronger each time.”
Moving Forward with Hypnotherapy
Healing from trauma isn’t about forgetting the past—it’s about finding the courage to reclaim your future. Hypnotherapy provides the tools to break free from the feedback loop of unresolved trauma and self-sabotaging behaviors. By accessing the subconscious mind, clients can identify and release the beliefs that no longer serve them. They can learn to trust themselves again, to take risks, to love, and to hope.
It’s important to remember that healing is a journey, not a destination. Each step forward—no matter how small—is progress. And with the compassionate guidance of hypnotherapy, that journey can feel less daunting and more empowering.
Let’s Rewrite Your Story

It’s a gentle, effective, and deeply compassionate approach to healing that doesn’t require you to revisit every painful memory. Instead, it meets you where you are, helping you move forward at your own pace.
