Why Hypnosis Isn't About Being 'Fixed' (And What It Is About)
The truth is, I've always disliked the word "fixed." It implies that something is broken. And when it comes to our minds, our emotions, and our lives, it's not that simple. We aren't machines with a broken part that just needs a replacement. We aren't cars in a shop needing new brakes or an oil change. We are much more complex, infinitely more beautiful, and—yes—sometimes messy. And that messiness is part of what makes us human.
I've had countless clients come to me, their eyes filled with pain, frustration, and a quiet hope, saying, "I just want to be fixed." It's a phrase that hits me right in the heart every time. Because behind those words, I hear the real story: a story of someone feeling lost, overwhelmed, scared—someone who believes that they are inherently wrong, or that there's a piece of them that is broken beyond repair.
The Myth of Being "Fixed"
If you’re reading this because you’re struggling and hoping to be "fixed," I want you to pause for a moment and take a deep breath. I want you to hear me when I say: You are not broken. Yes, you might be hurting. You might be lost. You might be carrying pain that feels too heavy. But that does not mean you are broken.
The idea that we need to be fixed is rooted in the belief that we are somehow flawed at our core, that our fears, anxieties, or the burdens we carry make us less whole. Hypnosis, at least the way I practice it, is not about erasing those parts of you. It's not about putting on a shiny mask of positivity or pretending everything is perfect. It’s about understanding, acceptance, and transformation. It’s about being—not fixing.
What Hypnosis Is Really About
If you're feeling overwhelmed or disconnected, a gentle way to begin this reconnection is through a Mental Detox, designed to clear the clutter of your mind. It’s not about adding or taking something away; it's about accessing what is already there within you. It’s about creating a space where you feel safe enough to listen to your own inner voice, the one that has often been drowned out by fear, self-doubt, or the constant noise of daily life.
For so many people, myself included, there are moments in life when we lose touch with who we are. The loss of a loved one, the end of a relationship, the weight of anxiety that won't lift—it all leaves us feeling fragmented. And that's where hypnosis comes in, not to patch you up like some quick-fix remedy, but to help you reconnect those fragments, to understand them, and to find meaning in them.
When I work with someone in a hypnotherapy session, I’m not looking for what’s broken. I’m listening for what is calling out for love, for understanding, for care. Maybe it's a past version of you, a child who felt unseen, or a memory that has been carried for too long without being fully understood. It’s about giving those parts of you the attention and care they’ve always needed, not locking them away or silencing them.
A Collaborative Journey
One of the most beautiful aspects of hypnosis is that it's a deeply collaborative process. I often tell my clients: I can guide you to the door of your subconscious, but only you can walk through it. It’s your journey, and I’m simply here to help you navigate it. The real power lies within you.
There’s no magic wand, no sudden click where everything is immediately perfect. Instead, there’s a process of gradual understanding, of exploring what lies beneath the surface, and sometimes that process benefits from a deeper mental cleanse. If you're interested, consider exploring the Mental Detox to assist in this journey of understanding, to learn from it, and, ultimately, to grow from it.
The truth is that every single one of us carries wounds. Life leaves its marks on us all, and no one is immune from that. The scars you have are not signs of weakness or brokenness; they are symbols of what you have survived. Hypnosis helps to transform the relationship you have with those scars, shifting them from a source of pain to a source of strength.
More Than Just "Positive Thinking"
A lot of people think hypnosis is just about instilling positive affirmations or making you believe in some perfect version of yourself. And yes, there is certainly a positive element to it, but it's not about forcing yourself into positivity or pretending that your struggles don't exist. I often work 'content free,' which means I don't even need to know every detail of what you're going through. The important thing is that you know, that your subconscious knows, and that it's allowed the space to do what it needs to do—without judgment, without expectations.
Sometimes it's about releasing an emotion that’s been trapped inside for years. Sometimes it's about shifting an outdated belief that you’re not good enough. And sometimes it’s about creating a deeper sense of inner calm, the kind of calm that allows you to face life’s challenges without feeling overwhelmed.
Finding Peace Without the Need to Be "Fixed"
After I lost Blue, my beloved dog, I remember sitting in my living room, feeling the weight of grief pressing down on me. The house felt empty, and a part of me felt lost. In those moments, I knew I didn’t need to be "fixed." I knew I needed to feel that grief fully, to let it wash over me, and to honor what Blue meant to me. I used self-hypnosis to help me through those moments, not to erase the pain but to find peace within it.
That’s what hypnosis is about—finding peace without the need to be fixed, finding acceptance without the need to be perfect. It’s about trusting that you have everything you need within you and allowing those parts of you to be heard, seen, and understood.
An Invitation to Yourself
For those seeking a starting point, my Mental Detox program may be a helpful first step toward that reconnection. Come with the intention of finding compassion for yourself, of realizing that you are not broken, that you are not less-than because of the pain you carry.
In my sessions, whether we work face-to-face or across the world through a screen, my goal is to create a space where you can let go of the idea of being "fixed." Instead, let’s explore together. Let’s uncover the wisdom that lies within the pain. Let’s find the strength that has always been there, even if it’s been hidden for a long time.
Because at the end of the day, hypnosis isn't about making you someone different. It's about reconnecting you with who you truly are. It’s about realizing that you are already whole, already enough—just as you are.
